Getting around St. John's: driving, transit and walkability

Where you live can change how you experience the city. St. John's is compact by Canadian standards, but hills, weather and route coverage make location important.

Local update · June 2026

Downtown changes with the season

The Downtown Pedestrian Mall opened for its 2026 season on June 25. Seasonal street changes, events and construction can affect driving and parking, so a downtown housing decision should be tested in more than one season.

01

Driving is the most flexible option

A car remains the easiest way to reach the full metro area, particularly for households with irregular work hours or frequent trips between St. John's and neighbouring municipalities.

When comparing homes, test the actual trip to work, school or childcare at the time you would normally travel. A short distance on a map does not always reflect winter conditions, school traffic or construction.

02

Public transit

Metrobus operates public transit in St. John's, with routes serving major destinations such as downtown, Memorial University, shopping areas and residential districts. Schedules and fares can change, so use the official trip planner before relying on a route for a housing decision.

A home close to one frequent route may be much more practical than a property that technically has service but requires transfers or a long walk in exposed weather.

03

Walking and cycling vary by neighbourhood

Downtown and parts of the centre city place shops, restaurants and services within walking distance. Newer suburban areas usually offer more space but often make a vehicle more useful.

  • Walk the route between the property and everyday destinations
  • Check sidewalk availability and winter maintenance
  • Consider hills and wind exposure, not distance alone
  • Verify parking rules for downtown and older neighbourhoods
